I’m a big fan of Jamie Oliver but I think this sets a bad precedent. He’s done a lot of good for the nutritional world with his cookbooks and his Food Revolution TV shows both here and in the UK. Bringing attention to the appalling state of school lunches is a great thing and it desperately needs to be done.
Athletes certainly do have a lot of influence, especially over children, and I’m the last person that wants to them (or anyone for that matter) advertising junk food.
My problem with this is what we’re going to define as junk food. School lunches are abysmal because they contain very little actual food in them. Junk food is the same way. They have plenty of calories, but very few nutrients or nutrients from very poor sources which prevents them from being bioavailable.
But most people would look at the numbers of my diet and say I’m eating in a very unhealthy manner. The misconceptions in and around good nutrition are too many to count. I personally eat a very high fat diet. How many people still believe that eating fat makes you fat?
I was pseudo-happy to see New York put a limit on the size of sugary drinks. You could still buy as much as you wanted, you just had to buy 2 mediums instead of 1 extra large. But it dissuaded people from buying more sugar than what they really were hungry for. Efforts to curb sugar consumption are something I’m all for. But how many people who voted for limits on sugar loaded drinks would have also voted for higher taxes on high fat foods? The foods that make up the majority of my diet?
Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of sources of fat that I won’t touch. My position is that food is all about quality. There is good fat and bad fat. I eat a LOT of good fat and that’s why I can train the number of hours I do without slurping down sugar-laden “sports” drinks and highly processed “energy gels”. Two-thirds of my daily diet is high quality fat and that’s how I maintain a body fat percentage under 7% year-round.
Denmark has already passed additional taxes on fat. Why should those of us who go out of our way to avoid hydrogenated oils in favor of grass fed butter, be punished for making the right choices?

Okay, back to the world of blogging. But on a new site whose format I like a hell of a lot more.
It’s 6 weeks until Casey and I head up to Des Moines for the 5150 Championship race so training is really getting interesting! I’ll post updates and all the random internet goodness here.
